Teacher’s Instruction:
Carry out an experiment to determine the %of CaCO3 in egg shell. Research Question:
What percentage by mass of an egg shell is Calcium Carbonate

?

Variables:
1.
2.
3.
Principle used:
The principle of back titration is used to determine the percentage by mass of an egg shell. Excess of

in

is added to a known mass of powdered egg shell. The solution

formed is diluted and titration is conducted on small aliquots of this solution using standard

. Rather than finding the amount of

shell, the amount of

that reacted with the

of the egg

unreacted is found out. Hence this process is termed as the back

titration technique.

Procedure:
1. Preparing the egg shells for the experiment:
The egg shells are removed of any membrane or other organic matter such as albumin that may have remained attached to the shell by washing it thoroughly. This is essential so that the foreign particle such as the membrane does not act as a hindrance in the reactions. Having washed them clean of foreign matters, the egg shells are dried using the hot air of a heat oven. The shells are then grinded into powder using mortar and pestle to maximize the surface area so that it’s dissolution in the

becomes easier.

2. Having prepared the egg shell powder,

of the powder is carefully measured using

a digital balance and taken in a conical flask. A conical flask is used to prevent any spurting out of the solution along with the

formed when

is added to the

powder.
3.

of given

solution is then carefully pipetted out into the

conical flask. As the

solution is being added to the powder, the conical flask is

swirled gently so that no solution spurts out of the flask along with the

which may

cause an error in the reading. The reaction that will occur in the flask will be as follows:

4. Once the egg shells are dissolved completely in the

solution, distilled water is

added to it until the complete diluted solution becomes

. This diluted solution

is taken into a measuring cylinder and kept aside.
5. Meanwhile the titration apparatus is set up filling the
into the burette and adjusting the level of...
