The Nitty Gritty Details

GRADING IN THE COURSE

Clickers: Clickers are used sporadically, generally the beginning of class so be on time! Students will receive 1 point for a correct answer, 1/2 point for an incorrect response and no points for not responding. Clicker questions will come in many varieties: review from the last class, questions on the topics that will be covered that day and you can glean from the reading. At no point during the semester will answers on paper be collected. NO IPHONES/IPADS/COMPUTERS can be used as clickers.

Homework: There will be 6 graded homework assignments this term. Each assignment will have 4-5 problems covering current course material. These homework sets is worth 20 points and will be released 48 hours before the due date.

Exams: The focus of these assessments will be on material reviewed in class and any/all assignments given to class. It is impossible to write an exam that just reflects the current material because the course is inherently cumulative. You have been warned!! The pre-assessment is multiple choice (no partial credit), and all other exams are free response (partial credit given). As the semester unfolds you will begin to see certain sections crop up on your exams. Expect to see these sections on your exams through the remainder of your tenure in o-chem. The first sections that will pop up are Reaction Outcomes and Mechanisms. By the third exam you should see a Synthesis section and a Spectroscopy section. In addition to these expected sections there will be a variety of miscellaneous questions pertaining to the material at hand. You are required to keep his/her University of Maryland photo...
