Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier

Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier was a French scientist who was known as the father of modern chemistry. Not only did he reform chemical technology, he constructed the metric system and named oxygen and hydrogen. The world has greatly benefited from Lavoisier’s studies.(Loosli)

Antoine Lavoisier was born on August 26, 1743 to a wealthy French family. His father was a lawyer, and Lavoisier was expected to grow up to be one also. Lavoisier studied law at college Mazarin only to please his family. At age 21 Lavoisier fulfilled his own dream of studying science. At age 25 Lavoisier entered the Academy of Science, which was a very high honor. Antoine Lavoisier is considered “the master-mind of the chemical revolution.”

Lavoisier married 13 year old Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze in 1771. She made sketches of her husband’s laboratory. Also, she helped translate Lavoisier’s work into English, which made scientists world-wide learn of his work.

“Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier discovered no new substances. He made few new improvements to laboratory methods, yet he will be remembered to the end of time as the father of modern chemistry. He took the works of others, most notably that of Priestly, Black, Cavendish and Sheele and explained it.”

Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier was guillotined on May 8, 1794 when he was 51 years old. He was found guilty of connections to the Ferme General. He a great and notable scientist who will always be remembered.
