Assessment is crucial to the educational learning process and refers to the practices by which teachers and students measure themselves. A literal definition of assessment is to sit beside and observe and is a diverse topic that spans from teacher–made exams to state and national standardized tests. There are three forms of assessment used in education: diagnostic, summative, and formative. Diagnostic assessment occurs at the beginning of the teaching/learning cycle, is used as a reference point to begin, and is typically not recorded as a grade. Many educational practitioners believe that diagnostic assessment is a form of formative assessment and, therefore, do not recognize it as a separate form of assessment. The two most commonly used forms of assessment in education are summative and formative. In using a balanced system of assessment, educational practitioners can succeed in improving both student learning and quality of teaching.
Summative assessment, also known as assessment of learning, is a traditional form of assessment and is still the predominant form of assessment observed in classrooms today. It is defined as the “evaluation administered at the conclusion of a unit of instruction to comprehensively assess student learning and the effectiveness of an instructional method or program” (Learn NC, University of North Carolina). Examples of summative assessment include state assessments, district benchmark exams, end of unit or chapter tests, end of term or semester exams, and scores used for accountability for the school and/or system and the student, which also include the ACT and SAT among other standardized tests.
