Chemistry and its relevance
Chemistry is a branch of science deeply rooted into history. It has been studied for many years, but for an elongated period, informally and without much intent. Chemistry is defined as, “the branch of science that deals with the identification of the substances of which matter is composed; the investigation of their properties and the ways in which they interact, combine, and change…” ("Definition of Chemistry in English." ) Chemistry is prominent for requiring a vast amount of experimentation and observation. Experiments are conducted for the better understanding of a mineral’s composition, its reactants, and its use in society. The history of chemistry’s study, and its importance to humans, takes us back to a period when human life first began to settle onto Earth.
The earliest humans can be identified as chemists, as they took part in discovering and observing the earliest forms of minerals, and identifying them for their use in survival. Some observed that certain objects such as wood, served as great building materials, as well as fuel for fires. As humans became more advanced, various minerals and objects, took use as building materials. Humans began to explore, and as a result were constantly finding new objects, materials or minerals. Ultimately ‘chemists’ paved the way for many inventions and tools such as “…extracting metals from ores, making pottery and glazes, fermenting beer and wine, extracting chemicals from plants for medicine and perfume, rendering fat into soap, making glass, and making alloys like bronze.” ("History of Chemistry.") Today chemistry is more formally studied and is conducted with the intent to discover new minerals and their interaction/ reaction to the presence of other materials.
Chemistry benefits humans today in a number of ways. We are constantly discovering new uses for minerals and materials, so that they could ultimately...
