Democritus was born in 460 BCE (estimated) in Abdera, Thrace. Democritus also known as the “Laughing Philosopher”. His theory was the matter could not be divided into smaller and smaller pieces forever, eventually the smallest possible piece would be obtained, and the piece would be invisible. He named the small piece of matter “atomos” meaning “not to be cut”. But as the time continued Aristotle, another Greek philosopher, thought that the atomic theory was worthless and then dismissed it. He on other hand, Aristotle was born in 384 BCE in Stagira, Greece. Aristolote mainly believed in the ultimate reality in physical objects. He made Genus and Species possible for us today. Aristotle famously rejected Plato’s theory of forms that object exist independantly. Aristotle argued that they can not exist apart. Plato another greek philospher believed the opposite as Aristotle. Also plato was Aristotle teacher at the Acadamy at the time. It wasent untill 2000 years after no one questioned the theory of atoms, untill the early 1800’s. John Dalton was born in 1766 in Cumberland, England. Dalton made many experiment strictly to atom study even though he had no idea what is was. He is most known for the extensive research on atoms. He proposed a table of atomic weights for the number of the known element. This image is Dalton’s table of elements and the number of elemental combinations described in his 1808 publication ‘New System of Chemical Philosophy’. It also shows the molecular of formula of known gases. His theory is all matter is made of atoms and unchangeable and indestructible. Also all atoms are given an element are identical in mass and properties. The theory continued; he believed that a chemical reaction was rearranged atoms and that compounds are formed by combination by two or more atoms. Work Cited
