It is said that around 39000 child marriages happen everyday according to the World Health Organisation. A child marriage can be defined as a union or marriage of a couple before the age of 18 , or can be seen as an act of forced marriage between a young couple as it is said that children before the age of 18 are too young to be given a consent . There are many cons to a child marriage and it is shameful to find more child marriages occurring in this ever developing world. In Malaysia, for a non -Muslim bride it is illegal to be married before the age of 16 . If a marriage is to be occurred and the bride is aged between 16 and 18 years old , consent must be asked from the Chief Minister or 'Menteri Besar' . For the groom , he is not allowed to be married before the age of 18 years . However, for a Muslim , it is legal to be married after the age of 16 with the consent from the Syariah Court. There is apparently certain flaws to these laws as in 2010 , two girls aged 10 and 11 respectively were married off to men in their 40s in Kelantan . The Syariah Court later ruled those marriages as Illegal. This not only happens here in Malaysia, but all around the world too. Niger seemed to be topping the charts in where almost 75 % of girls below the legal age are married off based on the Girls Are Not Brides website page. India is said to be one third of where all child brides live , however child marriages are Illegal according to Indian Law. Based on the general culture and traditions most of these child marriage happen around rural areas. This is because most parents believe that getting their child married off would decrease the chances of dishonour . In most cases, especially in rural areas, parents marry off their children to decrease the amount of mouths they have to feed and also is usually a form of tradition.
