Cons for Gay Marriage

1. It would weaken the definition and respect for the institution of marriage: The institution of marriage has traditionally been defined as between a man and a woman. The institution of marriage as a union of man and woman, uniquely involving the procreation and rearing of children within a family, is as old as the book of Genesis. Gay marriage is incompatible with the beliefs, sacred texts, and traditions of many religious groups.

2. Procreation involves a male and a female, even in animals and plants. It is not possible between people of the same sex. Marriage should not be extended to same-sex couples because homosexual relationships have nothing to do with procreation. Allowing gay marriage would only further shift the purpose of marriage from producing and raising children to adult gratification.

3. Marriage is a religious rite. According to a July 31, 2003 statement from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, marriage "was established by the Creator with its own nature, essential properties and purpose. No ideology can erase from the human spirit the certainty that marriage exists solely between a man and a woman”

4. Same-sex marriage is not a civil right, and conflating the issue with interracial marriage is misleading. Marriage is not a right. Marriage was created to allow society to support heterosexual couples in procreation and society can choose not to give the same benefits to same-sex couples

5. It would further weaken the traditional family values essential to our society. It will lead to more children being raised in same-sex households which are not an optimum environment for raising children because children need both a mother and father. Girls who are raised apart from their fathers are reportedly at higher risk for early sexual activity  and teenage pregnancy.
