As I stood, gazing at the dilapidated house, I shivered as though ice had replaced my spinal fluid. The cold air enveloped my entire body. Even the multiple layers of clothing could not protect me against the deathly cold. The walkway leading up to the house was cracked, withered weeds and old dandelions protruding out of the cement. Dead roses, once full of color and life, had previously grown wildly in thick batches by the gate. The moonlight cast a ghoulish glow on the house. Decaying vines formed a twisted maze upon the side of house, extending their extremities towards the roof as if swallowing the house. Its walls showed black decay and neglect. Splotches of original paint hinted at the house’s former prosperity. On the porch, cobwebs covered all corners, where tiny black spiders had spun their delicate traps to ensnare their prey. The house was fit for the kings and queens of the supernatural. I had to go in, I had to know why there was always one light in that oval window that mysteriously turned on every night. I had to know. The door grudgingly creaked ajar. A musty, dank odor slowly wafted into my nostrils. The house was dead silent except for the intermittent creaks and moans. Black and brown mold dotted the ceiling in clusters, supplying evidence of rain seeping through the roof. I quietly entered the dark living room. The windows were covered with grime and dirt and the calm moonlight struggled to penetrate the darkness in thinly threaded rays. Dark shadows loomed around the room. The sofa and chairs sat overturned, revealing deep grooves in the wood where they used to rest. A haphazard pile of wallpaper lay curled on the floor. Pictures, in heavy oak frames hung off-centered, and askew. A misplaced grand bookcase stood in the corner of the room, undisturbed for a long time and covered with dust. The bookcase hinted that to pull a certain volume from its place might lead to a secret labyrinth. I made my way back into the hallway, a glimmer of light...
