Experiment B: Separation of an Organic Acid from a Mixture
Pre-lab Properties: (You can try http://sciencelab.com for properties) 5% Sodium hydroxide, p-nitrobenzoic acid, p-nitrotoluene, diethyl ether, and 15% sulfuric acid
Purpose: To separate an organic acid from a mixture
Up to 100% of missed reporting points can be recovered for this lab Wear safety goggles at all times
All materials are either disposed in waste bottles in hoods or returned directly to TA for credit. Never leave compounds in drawers or on trays. Always record the information from the containers for your reagents! Minimize contact with ether and do not breathe its vapor
Add acid slowly into the sodium hydroxide solution
Always record weight of samples (especially when need a yield) Watch your available significant figures on the scales!
Use the same balance throughout the experiment (note the number in the procedure and in the post-lab report) Do not add sample while vessel or paper is on the balance
Deionized water has bacteria in it, use tap water
Extraction (under the hood):
Check the stopcock and stopper to prevent leakage
Vent occasionally during extraction, remove stopper when draining Keep stem pointed away from yourself and others while venting Submit sample in properly labeled vial
Put a large beaker in sink to prevent splashing
Moisten the filter paper with a few drops of solvent for better seal Let the solid dry on the filter paper for a few minutes
Test aspirator to see if working
AVOID BACK FLOW: DO NOT TURN OFF WATER TO STOP THE VACUUM, DISCONNECT TUBING FROM FLASK INSTEAD!!!
