Gay Marriage Right or Wrong
There are so many ethical issues that are continuously debated and still there has been no resolution. Gay Marriage is an ethical issue that has been debated for years. This is an issue that I think that will continue to be debated as a clear answer as to why it is morally wrong has yet to be determined. For so long a deontological view has been applied to the subject. Those who are opposed to same sex marriage take on this view. I do not think that a deontological view will solve the issue of whether same sex marriage is right or wrong. However I do fee l that taking on a perspective brought to the issue by relativism will assist in giving an understanding of why it is important that we respect the needs and wants of those who are in same sex relationships and allow Gay Marriage. This won’t solve the issue either but will just provide insight into their world. Religion has played a big part in how this issue of same sex marriage has been handled. Deontologists argue that the bible states the marriage is between a Man and woman. So no matter the consequences same sex marriage is not right. The legalization of same sex marriage has been addressed dating back to 1971 with Baker vs. Nelson. Here,” the court determined that homosexuals did not have the right to marry because marriage was defined as being between a man and a woman”. (Hansen 2006). The opposition of gay marriage when it comes to religion is based primarily on religious and scriptural grounds. For example the Catholic Church believe that marriage is a faithful, exclusive and lifelong union between one man and one woman a union established by god. ( Sullivan ,2004) However many have they own beliefs and interpretations of the bible. Does this mean that same sex marriage is morally wrong because the Catholic Church states the union of a
Marriage of a man and woman? My answer to that is no it doesn’t. Those that are follow traditional religious views argue that the institution of marriage has a very important relationship to the continuation of the human race , to the total development of the human person, and the dignity , stability , peace , and prosperity of the family and of society . ( Sullivan , 2004). In contrast this isn’t totally true; a person that is in a same sex relationship can very well be a person with all the aspect described. I believe whether one chooses to be heterosexual, homosexual or even single one can contribute and become an important part of society. Sexual orientation doesn’t determine ones value in the world as a person. Given that a government cannot dictate what is done within the church then there shouldn’t be any religious influence on the approval of gay marriage. There should be separation from religion and state. There are some that do not have religious preference who might be in a same sex relationship. It is not fair that the way they choose and want to live their lives be determined by religion. Being raised in a Christian household I have always been told that same sex anything was a sin. Most Christians believe that same sex marriage is morally wrong because the bible states Man and Woman not woman and woman or Man and Man. I question this view, as I was also taught God loves everyone so why is it wrong. When taking on a relativism approach one can Come back and state that just because the bible definition of marriage is between a man and woman doesn’t mean it is wrong. The interpretation of the bible is another issue that can be debated. Not everyone believes in the bible or has a religious preference. So how can we as a society base the right to be able to marry on the bibles definition of what marriage is?
There has been much controversy over gay marriage. The gay community has been subject to discrimination, hate crimes and protests. Give that people are starting to stir away from traditional deontological views...
