WHAT IS HOUSEKEEPING? Housekeeping is a provision of a clean, comfortable, safe and aesthetically appealing environment. Housekeeping is an operational department of a hotel, which is responsible for cleanliness, maintenance, aesthetic upkeep of rooms, public area, back areas and the surroundings. WHAT IS CLEANING? Cleaning is removal of dust, dirt, foreign matter, tarnish and stains from various surfaces with the aid of cleaning agents and equipments. WHY DO WE CLEAN? WHAT IS SOIL? Dust, dirt, foreign matter, tarnish and stains deposited on a surface are referred to as SOIL. DUST: Loose particles from the air It contains both organic and inorganic matters Organic matters: Human and animal hair, dead skin cells, particles of excreta, pollen from plants etc. Inorganic matters: Sand, dry earth DIRT: Dust held together firmly by moisture or grease on rough surfaces. TARNISH: Discolouring or deposition on a metal or alloy surface caused by chemical reaction with certain substance found in air, water and foodstuffs. For example: Iron gets reddish brown rust Copper gets greenish deposit of Verdigris Silver gets blackened STAIN: discolouration caused on a hard or soft surface by a substance containing dyes, proteins, acids or alkalis. FOREIGN MATTER: for example dead flowers, contents of waste paper basket and ashtrays etc.

All the above types of soil can be categorised under at least one of the following heads, depending upon the nature. Inorganic or Mineral: A homogeneous chemical element or compound, solid, liquid or gaseous substance having a chemical composition resulting from the inorganic processes of nature.
