Is Marriage Really Important? In society today, marriage is an important goal most people want to accomplish in life. However, some people do not believe in marriage and they feel true love does not exist. In his essay “Why the M Word Matters to Me,” Andrew Sullivan talks about marriage being the most important day in someone’s life. He also talks about his personal life and he gives an important advice for those who seek marriage. However, in their article “What if Marriage is bad for us?” Laurie Essig and Lynn Owens argue that marriage is not necessarily good for everyone and it might even be bad for most of us. Both articles share different opinions on marriage and they also give an advice to readers at the end of their article. One difference between Sullivan and Essig and Owens is the benefit of marriage. In the article “Why the M Word Matters to Me,” Sullivan uses his personal life to show the importance of marriage. Sullivan writes “The most important day of your life was when you got married” (158). He mentions that marriage is important and he wants people to believe in marriage. However, Essig and Owens both stated that “Marriage is not necessarily good for all of us, and it might even be bad for most of us” (163). Essig and Owens do not believe in marriage and they both conclude that marriage can be the worst decision to make. They also describe how marriage can lead to poverty and an unhealthy lifestyle. The difference between the author’s articles is that, Sullivan argues that marriage is important for everyone, but Essig and Owens argue that marriage might be bad for most people.
