Jewish Marriage Essay

Question: Refer specifically to the three purposes of marriage to analyse the significance of this practice in expressing the principal beliefs of Judaism

Judaism traditions in marriage are the basic reality of sexual relation between a man and a woman, which is most clearly established by human nature. Marriage in Judaism is bringing together two individuals under God’s reign and spiritual traditions that they must obey. All Jewish adherents see marriage as a necessity in order to obey God and to experience the fullness of life. In Genesis God says: “It is not good for the man to be alone, I will make a helper suitable for him.” This is a set link between individuals and recognises two people coming together as one, celebrated by the friends and family and a wider community around them.

Traditional sources recognise that in Judaism companionship, love, and intimacy are the primary purposes of marriage, having be that women was created in Gen. 2:18 because “it is not good for man to be alone” rather than because she was necessary for procreation. Judaism considers marriage to be the ideal state of human existence. As a result, marriage is viewed as the joining of a couple to form a complete entity, giving them strength and vitality to maintain a Jewish life and to grow physically, mentally and spiritually in there journey of life. In doing so, they gain a voice and new standing within the Jewish community.

The primary purpose of sex is to reinforce the loving marital bond between husband and wife. The first and foremost purpose of marriage is companionship, and sexual relations play an important role also. Procreation is also a reason for sex, but it is not the only reason for it. Sex between husband and wife in Jewish marriage is permitted and sometimes recommenced towards them from fellow peers.
