CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Students struggles with many issues in their lives, and because of all the competing things for their attention, it is hard to concentrate on studying. And yet if students are in school, they have to do at least a little studying in order to progress from year to year. The key to effective studying is not cramming or studying longer but studying smarter. (Grohol, J. 2012) Learning styles differ from person to person. Their study habits seem to show differences in how they become skilled at and how earnest they are about learning. Study habits are the ways that the children have formed during the school years. It can be good or bad ones. Good study habits include being ordered, keeping good notes, reading textbook, listening in class, and working every day. While poor study habits include skipping class, not doing work, watching TV or playing video games instead of studying, and losing your work.

All learning, however, is a process which settles into certain steps. Students with learning problems may still have generally inefficient and ineffective study habits and skills. Becoming aware of someone’s learning style will help to understand why student sometimes get frustrated with common study methods. This paper was based on an earlier research conducted by John M. Grohol. The focus of Grohol’s study was ten highly effective study habits. Grohol conclude that because of the students divided attention each and everyone of them must have at least three study habits to be able to progress every year.

Research on memory provides a number of important suggestions about the most effective ways to study. One of the most important tips is that students should study by testing themselves rather than just reading over the material. It is also important to study over a period of days rather waiting until the last minute to study. (Bjork, R. 2007)

The study habits are affected by both external and internal conditions. One external factor would be the physical location of the study area. Students learn best when they study in a specific location where external distraction is at minimum. (Free of TV, stereo, interruptions by family and friends, or telephone, pager or computer contact.)There are two arenas of thought on this - one school says distractions enhance the power to stay focused. Through studying the students may develop their academic skills and make better their test scores and grades. They also transfer their learned skills toothier aspects of their lives, noticeably improving their overall aptitudes.(http://www.termpaperwarehouse.com/essay-on/Thesis-About-Study-Habits/29176) The purpose of this study is to further know the different learning techniques mostly used by the students and to know the different programs that will enhance the students academic performance.
