Legalization of Sam-Sex Marriage

In America, 1.8 percent of the adult population has admitted to being openly gay. There are over 315 million people in the United States, and 4 million of them are gay. None of those 4 million people can get married unless they live in one of the 9 states that legalized same-sex marriage. However, in 11 other countries, any type of couple can get married and there is no discrimination. The definition of marriage is the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage <same-sex marriage> (b) : the mutual relation of married persons (“MarriageAbout”). In 1958, 94 percent of the public was against interracial marriage just like how they are against same-sex marriage. Today 35 percent of Americans have a family member or close friend who has an interracial marriage. Even in 1986, the public was still divided drastically. With seeing the drastic change in the statics about interracial marriage, hopefully one day soon we will see a drastic change with same-sex marriage (Trumbull). Too many people think that the sanctity of marriage will be ruined if same-sex couples were to get married. Out of some of those same people they believe they should be allowed to have a civil union, just not marriage. But, over 50 percent of heterosexual couples’ first marriages end in divorce. Nearly 150,000 same-sex couples have either married or registered civil unions or domestic partnerships, which constitutes about one-fifth of same-sex couples in the U.S (Hertz). Out of the same-sex couples only 1 percent of marriages end in divorce each year, in comparison to the 2 percent of straight couples. States that have recognized same-sex marriage have seen a decrease in divorce rates as an overall. There are in fact several differences between a civil union and marriage.
