Use of Taylorism in contemporary organistions

Taylorism contributed in many areas of management in nowadays organisations. Four aspects are selected to present.

Dividion labour.

Taylor reduced the number of people shoveling at the Bethlehem steel works from 500 to 140. This work, and his studies on the handing of big iron, greatly contributed to the analysis of work design and gave rise to method study.

Mass production methods in modern day factories

This method could product the highest volum of production by use a sequence consist of the best actions and best tools using by the best workers. It reduces fault, inefficiency and invalid motions among product.

Automation and outsourcing

Outsourcing is the contracting out of a business process, which can organization may have previously performed internally or has a new need for to an independent organization from which the process is purchased back as a service.

Outsourcing is dividing the activities of the business into various specialized role and sending part of the activities overseas to obtain economic efficiency or cheap labour costs.

For example, a company like Tesco sends its call centre to India, it is somehow adopting the principles that Taylor suggested regarding scientifically dividing tasks in the workplace to improve productivity and reduce economic output.

Lean manufacturing

Lean is centered on preserving value with less work.

Lean manufacturing is a variation on the theme of efficiency based on optimizing flow and it is a present-day instance of the recurring theme in human history toward increasing efficiency, decreasing waste and using empirical methods to decide what matters, rather than uncritically accepting pre-existing ideas.

International manager’s assignments

International management is the process of developing strategies, designing and operating system, and working with people around the world to ensure sustain competitive advantage.

The international manager’s assignment involves overseeing and setting up strategies for the company’s overseas activities.

For example, a manager of international fast food company needs to consider the habits and religions of the region they are going to operate.

Factors affecting the international manager’s activities

The job or assignment of an international manager is affected by several issues including environment challenges such as political, social/ culture and economic factors present in the host counties that their companies operate in.

Characteristics of international managers

The top characteristic of an international manager includes many soft skills, such as ability to work in international team, adaptability to new situations, sensitivity to different culture and awareness of own culture background and relational skills. The manager should be self-reliant and have open, non-judgmental personality.

Risk factors

The PEST framework is an ideal framework to use to understand the risk and complexities that affect the international manager in carry out his task.

Political risk

The risk refers to any governmental action or politically motivated event that could adversely affect the long-run profitability or value of a company.

Some of the political risk that affect the international manager’s assignment could including the threat of terrorism, incentives for multi-national trade, control on international trade, etc.

For instance, the government of Venezuela recently forced all companies to accept a minority stake in flied they owned and to pay more in taxes and royalties.

Economic risk

These are factors in the economic environment of a country that may affect the way an international company conduct its business.
