Assessments are used for a number of reasons and at different times in the learning programme. The types of assessment used in life long learning are known as • Initial- used to evaluate the suitability of the learner and assess their ability. • Formative- determines learner’s strengths and weaknesses with aim to improve their progress. • Summative- this takes place at the end of the learning programme and leads to a grade or mark. •
There are many different assessment methods which I can use in lifelong learning such as: • Assignments
• Self and peer assessment
• Learning journals
• oral and written questioning
• professional discussion
• case studies
• product evidence
• puzzles and quizzes
• formal or informal
• recognition of prior learning
These methods are used to personalise individual learning. For example: Assignments could be used to help the learner put theory into practice and would be able to cover many aspects of the criteria taking a holistic approach. All assessments should be valid ensuring I am assessing what is meant to be assessed and reliable ensuring results would be achieved when delivering to different learners. They can be formal like a test, or informal like observation or a quiz. Tasks or activities will be internal (produced by you or your organisation) or external (produced by the awarding body) I would use methods to suit the learner, for example if my learner was deaf the methods I use would involve reading and writing in the form of tests, written questioning and assignments. Assessments are used to evaluate learners performance and will be quality assured ensuring fairness and consistency. Assessment methods must follow a logical, credible process, principles, procedures and processes. All assessments should be explicit, valid (covering the criteria to measure against standards set by the awarding body and must be their own work) also Reliable (based on the learners performance) and consistent.
Advantages and disadvantages of the following assessment methods that can be used to meet the learner needs.
