Same Sex Marriage
One of the country’s most controversial topics today would have to be whether it is right or wrong if two members of the same sex marry. Some people argue that it is against what God had intended for a man and woman, and others say that God made each and every person from his image; therefore being gay is not a religious issue, but an issue of society. I don’t see how it is anyone’s business as to who a person is going to marry. We never told anyone they weren’t allowed to marry the person they loved, so who is anyone to say that the person can’t marry the person they love, even if they are part of the same sex. Freedom is the idea our country was built on. It is what makes our country so special. To not give someone the freedom to marry the person they love is not just and injustice, but it’s also unconstitutional. The Constitution promises us liberty and equality under both the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses. By denying the homosexual population the right to marry, we are in violation of the Constitution itself. A civil union is allowed, but marriage is still not an option in many states. This illustrates the homosexual population to being inferior to that of the heterosexual population, not worthy of being allowed to marry. This again violates our constitution as it showing the inequality in the United States today. Homosexual marriage does go against many religious views however. It was approved by Pope John Paul II that “marriage was established by the Creator with its own nature, essential properties and purpose. No ideology can erase from the human spirit the certainty that marriage exists solely between a man and a woman” (Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith). Many argue that God made a man and a woman so that they may be able to reproduce, which is the point of marriage.
