Supporters of gay marriage argue around the concept of equality in America. Our country is said to be found on the principle that all men are created equal, so that make it hypocritical to deny the rights of homosexuals, as it was hypocritical to deny freedom to African Americans or to prohibit women's suffrage. Supporters also believe that Gays should be allows the same benefits as regular married couples. For instance, only through marriage do same sex couples have the rights to their partner's insurance benefits, Social Security, Medicare, or property inheritance. Also, without a legally recognized marriage, gay partners cannot be acknowledged as next of kin in the case of a medical emergency or incapacitation. Denying someone their right to a full and equal marriage is a serious form of minority discrimination. It is unconstitutional and unjustified to deny Gays of their right just because they are different. Currently as of Nov. 7, 2012, same sex marriage has been legalized in nine US states which includes (ME, MD, MA, CT, IA, VT, NH, WA, and NY) and the District of Columbia (ProCon.org 2012). Thirty-one states have constitutional amendments banning same sex marriage and six states have laws banning gay marriage (ProCon.org 2012). Some argue that same sex couples should have access to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples and that prohibiting gay marriage is unconstitutional discrimination (ProCon.org 2012). Most states argue that altering the traditional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman will further weaken a threatened institution and that legalizing gay marriage is a slippery slope that may lead to polygamous and interspecies marriages (ProCon.org 2012).
