Weekend: Marriage

Teamwork and marriage are two words that should go hand in hand. When two people get married it is because they love each other and want to devote their lives to that person. They are each other’s back bone and depend on one another. It is about appreciating one another and helping each other when it’s needed. Marriage should always come with the good and the bad but the good should overcome the bad overall. In Weekend, written by Fay Weldon, it is the opposite case for poor Martha and her husband, Martin. In the beginning of this story, it clearly proves that Martha is a very busy woman. Weldon digs right into her getting the house packed up and the children ready to leave for their weekend house. She is dressing the children, preparing the food, stripping the beds, and locking up the house. Being the reader, it goes noticed whether being home or at their weekend house, Martha does not get a break. She is always working hard on something. No matter how much Martha does, her husband seems to not realize. He tries to control situations and he likes things done his way. Martin is unappreciative of his wife and it shows when he belittles her and doesn’t offer his assistance or help in any situation. Martha’s cooking and cleaning are two categories that go unappreciated by Martin. “Martin doesn’t like a mess” and to make sure of that Martha cleans all day until everything is spotless. Specifically on this Friday, Martin comes home from work and he doesn’t offer help. Instead, he sits down to watch the news while Martha clears the table. When they arrive at the weekend house, it was late but Martha still had work to do. “Then clear up the supper: set the dough to prove for the bread: Martin already in bed: exhausted by the drive and lighting the fire.” It shows unfairness that Martin feels the need to relax at night after a long day at work, meanwhile Martha bends over backwards to do everything up to his expectations.
