Pearson,J.C., Nelson, P. E., Titsworth, S., & Harter. L. (2012) Human communication: Make it smart. Keep it real (5th ed). McGraw Hill. Earlier versions and online versions are acceptable.

Course Description: This course is a performance-based course that provides theory and practice in interpersonal, intrapersonal, small group, intercultural, and mass communications. The course emphasizes the responsibilities of individuals in the communication process required by a variety of communication settings. The course explores the principles of communicating the barriers to communication, and techniques to improve communication skills. This course focuses on reading and writing competencies and meets the CLAS communication skills requirement.

Course prerequisite: Students must have passed ENC 1101 with a “C” or better in order to enroll in SPC 2017

Course Policies: The perspective of this professor is that each student enrolled in this course is an adult and should be treated as such. Each person will accept the consequences of any choice they make. With this in mind, the attendance policy in this course is that attendance is expected and required. All major assignments must be completed in order to receive a passing grade in this class. Failure to complete any major assignment will result in an “F” for the term. All out of class assignments are to be typed, double-spaced and formatted according to the APA 6th edition, unless otherwise indicated. Any assignment completed late will be lowered one letter grade for each class it is late. Because of the nature of this course, presentations MUST be given on the day assigned. Academic integrity is taken very seriously in this course. Any attempts at academic dishonesty will be considered a serious offense and discipline, including expulsion, will be pursued through all means available. Refer to the catalog’s definition and explanation of plagiarism (p. 385). Laptops are to be used for class-related purposes only. Any violation of this policy will result in a loss of the privilege. All cell phones are to be turned off or to silent. Under no circumstances should a call be answered during a class period. Likewise, texting is not only a serious breach of etiquette, but entirely unacceptable without prior permission from instructor. Engaging in this conduct may result in a 10-point deduction per occurrence and/or dismissal from the class and forfeiture of all in-class points.

Enrollment in Course: Students enrolled in this course will be assigned a final grade that will impact their cumulative GPA. Exceptions to this are students who are absent the entire first week of class, they will be removed and receive a NA on their transcript. Students may withdraw without academic penalty up until January 24th, 2012. Students with Disabilities: The College fully complies with the provision of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). Course Assignments:

Speech of Introduction: Students will have an opportunity to present themselves to the class and gain familiarity with the Public Speaking context. The length of this speech is 2 – 3 minutes.
